Employee Profile - Graham McKay [return]
Quality Systems & Process Improvement Manager

Family life:

Graham has lived locally in Kilbarchan for about 28 years. He’s married to the lovely Sandra and has two sons – Stewart (a Quantity Surveyor) and Alasdair (in his final year at Glasgow University studying Statistics).

Work History:

Graham has worked with Smith & McLaurin twice over the last thirty years. He was with the company for 22 years and then moved on to work with Worldmark, a company based in East Kilbride for 2.5 years. In the meantime he also started his own company Integrated Labels and this April marked its 5 year anniversary. As our Quality Systems and Process Improvements Manager, Graham is the person who ensures that we maintain our ISO 9001:2000 status and implement any required improvements. He also manages our FSC/PEFC dual chain-of-custody certification and our compliance with their strict reporting procedures. Overall he describes is job as “trying to make our manufacturing processes consistent and reproducible over time.”

Interests:

Graham is an avid Rugby fan and used to play for the Allan Glens club in his younger days. Nowadays, along with a group of 12 friends, he follows the 6 Nations and makes it part of his annual holiday. He also is musically inclined and plays the bass drum in the Kilbarchan Pipe Band as well as being a member of the Family Village Band and his church’s musical society. The Kilbarchan Pipe Band is extremely popular and between spring and autumn they perform at a monthly concert. They also play at weddings and undertake other commissions.

Future Plans:

Like all of us at Smith & McLaurin, Graham is committed to seeing the company through this tough economic period and through what we all see as a challenging year ahead. He has complete faith in our management team who have done their best to keep Smith & McLaurin growing from strength to strength. He intends to set up a more robust corrective action system and manufacturing processes that focus on “getting it right the first time” and encourage the effective use of materials as well as concentrates on driving down waste.
He wishes all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
