Green Inspiration - Working with the community
[return]
Art project commissioned with local primary school.
Smith & McLaurin has enlisted the help of a local school – Thorn Primary, to help us with a unique art project. The student’s have been commissioned to create a piece of art that will grace the walls of Symphony Corp, a valued partner of ours. The collage will be made entirely from our AdaptEco range of FSC certified and other environmentally friendly materials and be centred on the 3Rs of sustainability – Reduce, Recycle & Reuse.
Thorn Primary is an ideal candidate for this project as the school has already achieved the bronze and silver awards from the Eco-Schools Programme, and is actively working towards getting its gold status. Eco Schools is an international programme aimed to encourage schools to look after the environment. It promotes environmental awareness and has links to most curricular areas. It works by involving the whole school - pupils, teachers and other staff, together with members of the local community - parents, the local authority, the media and local businesses.
As an Eco-school, Thorn Primary has made a commitment to help educate its pupils on environmental issues. The school has its own Eco-Committee consisting of students, teachers and parents which has spearheaded a wide variety of activities, such as paper recycling, litter patrols and encouraging pupils to walk to school. The school has also registered for the Morrison’s Let's Grow campaign and by collecting vouchers the pupils are able to exchange them for gardening equipment to be used within the school grounds.
We at Smith & McLaurin are looking forward to working with Thorn Primary in the future and hope to learn from their enthusiasm on our journey towards being a truly sustainable business.
We echo their eco-code, written by Primary 6/7:
“Recycle at school
that’s so cool!
Switch off the light
and that's all right.
Don't use the car
it isn't far.
Litter goes in the bin
then we all win!”
